Inmates on the rise in Nigerian Prisons

 

The Nigerian Prisons Service has said there are no fewer than 53,100 inmates in prisons across the country.
Out of this figure, 47,200 were standing trial as at June 20, 2012.

Although the Federal Government and the insurers that insured the ill-fated Dana Airline that crashed recently in Lagos have assured family members of the victims that compensation will not be delayed, unfolding events tend to point otherwise.

Despite the promise that the compensation about 30,000 dollars will begin to get to the beneficiaries within 30 days, the rigorous process of getting Letters of Administration before compensation can be paid is a very big hurdle to cross.

North, Reps forced Jonathan to sack Azazi, Defence Minister — Investigation

 

Immense pressure from the North and the House of Representatives forced President Goodluck Jonathan to sack his former National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi (retd) and Minister of Defence, Dr. Haliru Bello on Friday.


According to Investigations, Jonathan removed Azazi, who also hails from Bayelsa State like him, in order to appease power brokers in the northern part of the country and angry members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

BOMB FREE SUNDAY: Christians in the North offer prayers for peace

 

Christians in Northern Nigeria on Sunday offered special prayers in churches for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the region.

Blast outside Abuja nightclub after security chiefs’ sack

ABUJA (AFP) – A blast went off outside a nightclub in the capital city Abuja hours after the national security adviser and defence minister were sacked amid fears over spiralling violence in the country’s north.


No casualties were reported in the explosion late Friday. Windows in the nightclub, a bank and a barber shop were shattered and a number of cars were damaged.

Kaduna residents flee in numbers

 

The exodus of residents of Kaduna state on friday, followed the relaxation of the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state as a result of the current outbreak of violence in which many people were killed.

The state governor, Patrick Yakowa, had on Thursday in a statewide broadcast relaxed the 24-hour curfew by four hours to allow Muslims to observe their Friday prayers.

Dealers in counterfeit drugs to get life imprisonment – DG, NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has finalised plans to present a bill to the National Assembly, prescribing life imprisonment for dealers in counterfeit drugs.


The proposed bill will also prescribe the confiscation of the property of offenders aside other fines.
