The Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps members currently serving in Akure, the Ondo State capital, wept uncontrollably on Thursday when a motorist hit and killed one of them. The deceased, Mr. Olaniyan Tosin Michael, with call up number 0D/11C/0301, was on his way to the venue of the weekly Community Development Service when the incident happened.
It was learnt that the motorist, identified as Olaoluwa Fasemo, an employee of Coopcocoa Industry in Akure, was speeding when Olaniyan was crossing the road to the Akure South Local Government Secretariat at about 9 am.
One of the corps members, Miss Kemi Omilana, told newsmen that the noise of passers-by drew the attention of people to the scene.
Omilana said most of the corps members, who were inside the council secretariat, had to rush to the scene, only to discover that one of their colleagues was lying helplessly in the pool of his own blood.
She said the driver immediately abandoned his vehicle in the middle of the road and fled.
It was learnt that the victim was rushed to the state hospital in Akure and was later referred to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
The corps member was, however, confirmed dead on Thursday night.
The Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in the state, Mrs. Christy Olatoye, said the death of the Aramoko Ekiti-born corps member was a rude shock to the agency.
She said the NYSC in the state had informed the family of the late Olaniyan, whose primary assignment was at Goodnews Grammar School, Osinle, Akure, about the development.
Olatoye said the NYSC in the state would play its part in the burial of the deceased.
The state police command spokesman, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, confirmed the incident and stated that the driver had been arrested and his vehicle impounded.
He said investigation into the matter had started and that the suspect would soon be charged to court.
