The wife of Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s lawyer, Ifedayo Adedipe, (SAN) was yesterday, kidnapped by four armed gunmen. The incident took place at about 7:30am. She was abducted at the junction linking Woshikem and Okpowoabasi streets at Rumuodomaya, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The four hefty men in their early 30s were said to have accosted the businesswoman, as she was driving out in her car with Lagos registration number IA O5.
An eyewitness narrated how the bandits forced her out of her car, shot sporadically into the air to scare people away. She was later pushed into their vehicle and whisked away. People who had already opened their shops for business that early morning were seen running helter skelter for fear of being hit by stray bullets .
A young girl, who was selling recharge cards at the junction where the incident took place, simply identified as Ann, fainted and was unconscious for more than one hour. She was later rushed to a nearby hospital. When Daily Sun visited the scene, the victim’s vehicle was still parked on the spot, where she was kidnapped while two policemen were seen interrogating some residents of the area, who gathered in groups, discussing the incident in hush tones. Some of them lamented the kidnap of the victim, exactly at the spot where the leader of the community’s vigilance group, Asonye, was shot dead by armed robbers a month ago.
“This is exactly the spot where Asonye was shot dead by some armed robbers a month ago,” a source who doesn’t want his name in print told the reporter. He said he was in the area when the kidnappers struck, adding that he was yet to recover from the shock. “I pushed my relatives into the shop, to avoid being hit by stray bullets,” he said.
Meanwhile, Adedipe, who in a state of shock was at home when his wife was kidnapped, later visited the scene and drove out with the policemen. As at the time of filing this report, the kidnappers had neither contacted the family nor made any financial demands.
The reporter made efforts to confirm if the Police had any clue about the victim’s whereabouts, or if there was breakthrough in efforts being made to rescue her but the Police were not forthcoming with information. Several phone calls to the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, did not get through. Efforts were also made to get the view of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Mr Joshak Habila, on the matter.
However, when contacted on phone, the Rivers Police Command spokesman, Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam, said the anti-kidnap squad had swung into action, but declined any further comment on the matter.
