Gunmen kill 20 at Deeper Life Church during service



A gang of gunmen yesterday invaded the Deeper Life Bible Church in Okene, Kogi state and killed no fewer than 16 christian worshippers, with scores of others seriously wounded.

NigerianEye gathered that the gunmen invaded the church while members were in the Monday evening bible study service, blocked all exit doors in the church auditorium and opened rains of hot bullets on them.

 While some survivors told newsmen that no fewer than 20 persons were killed in the attack, the military Joint Task Force commander in the state, Lt Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi confirmed that 16 were killed in the attack

The gunmen, who were said to be bearing sophisticated weapons, stormed the church during the Bible Study, a Monday programme, at about 7p.m., shooting indiscriminately.

The gunmen reportedly took the worshippers by surprise. They blocked all entrances into the church, preventing people from escaping as they fired indiscriminately at the worshippers.

The church is located opposite Federal College of Education in Okene while some of the wounded whose cases are very critical are now under heavy military guard at the state General Hospital, Okene where about 15 of them are between life and death.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet.


Following the attack, the state governor issued this statement:

Following Monday's dastardly attack on a christian worshippers in Okene, Kogi state, governor Idris Wada cut short a Ramadan state function dinner and summoned an emergency meeting of the state executive committee.

Furious about news of the unfortunate situation governor Wada vowed he will spare no resources in smoking terrorists out of Kogi state. According to him the perpetrators of the heinous crime are wicked, devilish, ungodly and deserve no place in a same society.

Kogi state, he said has always been known for peace any act capable of tarnishing the image of the state will not be tolerated at all.

He called on all citizens of the state to remain calm.
