Pandemonium as diver dies on rescue mission

PANDEMONIUM broke out in Ughelli, Delta State on Thursday, following attempts to recover the body of a diver who drowned in the Ughelli river while on a rescue operation of a dredger that sank in the river.
The dredger said to be owned by a contractor working for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) sank in the river on Monday around the bridge at the Amekpa junction while executing a project to open up the river.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the dredger sank a week after the project began, adding that the contractor engaged the services of the Port Harcourt based diver to assist in the recovery of the dredger.

The source said one of the divers whose identity could not be ascertained at the time of this report, got to the point where the dredger was, but moments after, the diver was discovered to be missing as all efforts to locate him afterwards proved abortive.

A colleague of the diver who preferred anonymity said the deceased was a senior diver with over 25 years working experience
